Area 8: Nanoscale and Molecular Networking

Recent advances in MEMS/NEMS and systems biology combined with nanoscale robots, synthetic microorganisms, and lab-on-a-chip or process-on-a-chip applications are providing the test ground to unlock a host of disruptive technologies. However, in order to realize their full potential, these devices will need to be integrated by communication networks that may need to operate at the nanoscale or through multi-scales. The past decade has seen the rise of research in nanoscale and molecular networking as means of solving this problem.

Original papers on the following topics are sought for an upcoming special issue of the IEEE Journal on Special Areas in Communications (JSAC):

á       Applications of nanoscale and molecular networking: Industrial applications; laboratory implementation and real-world evaluation; standardization.

á       Systems and devices for nanoscale and molecular networking: communication components; antennas; carbon nanotube networks; microchannels; lab-on-chip systems; molecular motors; physical processes for emission and detection of molecular messages.

á       Architectures for nanoscale and molecular networking: Interfacing with the macroscale world; communication protocols; modulation and coding schemes; multi-scale networking (nano-micro-macro).

á       Analysis and design of nanoscale and molecular communication systems: Information-theoretic capacity of communication; parameter estimation; system models and designs; system comparison and performance measurement; localization and addressing; algorithmic aspects.

Papers will be published in a special online-only issue of IEEE JSAC, as part of a series on emerging technologies. Submission and paper handling will be via the EDAS system, http://edas.info. For further information, please send a message to the area editor, Dr. Andrew Eckford (aeckford@yorku.ca), or see http://www.jsac.ucsd.edu/.
